One More Reason To Make Sure Your Family Gets Enough Sleep!

We all know that we feel better after a good night of rest. We know our children are more cheerful when they have had a restful night of sleep. In many of my workshops, I talk about many of the health benefits that we get from getting adequate sleep on a daily basis. We know that it is not safe to drive without enough sleep too!

Here are two articles from Dole mentioning studies on sleep and metabolism. This information is beneficial to adults and children. When we do not get enough sleep, our bodies are tired throughout the day and they crave quick energy- sugar, carbs, caffeine etc. When we get adequate rest we are less likely to overeat.

“We’ve seen the data that says adults who don’t sleep enough are 72% more likely to be obese. Though the mechanism is not totally clear, researchers think the connection may have to do with disruptions to the appetite hormones leptin and ghrelin. Leptin is the hormone that tells you when you’re full, while ghrelin is the one that tells you to keep eating. When you are sleep deprived, these hormones get out of whack and you feel a stronger urge to keep eating.” – Dole Newsletter 2017

It takes work to get the whole family on a good sleep cycle to feel energetic and healthy, but sleep is a very important part of a healthy lifestyle!
